Kindergarten

The Kindergarten Curriculum

Reading Curriculum

In Reading class, we will introduce all the letters of the alphabet and also learn their sounds. Eventually we will begin to blend these letter sounds into words. In addition, we will learn several sight words, including the color and number words. By the end of Kindergarten, our goal is to be able to start READING!! Moreover, we will work on skills such as rhyming, classification, sequencing, comprehension, etc. We will also teach the correct letter formations using the D'Nealian Heandwriting method.

Math Curriculum

Our math curriculum is mostly hands-on learning. However, we will introduce and write the numbers 0-20 and beyond. Plus, we will work on several counting skills including counting forward past 100 and backwards from 30 and skip counting by 2's 5's and 10's. We will also work on writing number sentences, patterning graphing, measurement, time, money, tally counting, and more!

Show & Tell

As we cover all the consonant letters in the alphabet, students will be asked to bring in an item from home that begins with the particular letter we are learning at that time. In the past, we have has all kinds of interesting items brought in. (For example, for "Bb" Day, students have brought in everything from stuffed bears, buttons, balls, beans, and balloons, to real live bunnies, sisters named "Becky", and Beauty and the Beast characters.) Pets are discouraged from being brought in as some students may have allergies. They will be allowed only if they have been approved by the teacher and arrangements have been made prior to Show and Tell day.

Although it is the responsibility of the students to find these items at home, your assistance may be necessary at times. However, try to get your child to think of some things they might want to bring in to share. We have found that the kids seem to enjoy this sharing acitivity and they tend to retain much more what they are encouraged to apply their reading skills at home like this. In addition, it keeps you aware of what we are studying at school and helps us to get to know your child better too as they usually bring in items of importance to them. Your child will receive a small sticker each time they remember to bring their Show & Tell item on time.

Look in your child's folder daily to know when Show & Tell will take place.
